Coach Perkins will start his third season as head coach of the Mobile Bay Tornados and feel that this is the year for the Tornados to bring home the ABA Championship. In addition to Coaching the Tornados, Coach Perkins own and Coach the Mobile Tropic Ladies team.

Coach Perkins coaching career started in 1976 with the United States Army Military Police Company where he coached its first Bridge Championship.  He played at Toulminville High School and Bishop State Community College in Mobile, Alabama.  With over 30 years of coaching experience from high school to the semi-pro levels.   Alfred is instrumental in placing boys and girls in colleges and universities to further their education and basketball career.

Coach Perkins started coaching and training youth in 1984 and organized the Mobile Hoopers, Inc in 1989. Participant I this program have earned numerous gold medals for basketball competition in the Alabama Sports Festival, Alabama Athletic Union {AAU], Youth Basketball of America [Y.B.O.A.], and local league competitions.

1993-94 – Named Assistant Head Coach of the varsity girls basketball program at John L. Leflore Magnet High School in Mobile, Alabama.  He coached the varsity girls to its first – ever 6A State Championship with a 29-0 record and a National ranking of No. 17.   In 1994-95, he continued as the Assistant Head Coach with a record of 17-4.

1994 thru 1996 – Served as Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Bishop State Community College and from 1994 – 2006 served as a recruiter for its Women’s Basketball Program.

2001– Named Assistant Coach with the Mobile Majesty Women Semi-Pro Basketball Team and within the same season was appointed Interim Head Coach where he coached the team to win its first-ever National Championship which was held in St. Louis, Missouri.  The Mobile Majesty was a member of the National Women’s Basketball League of the USA Division [NWBL].

2002-03 – Joined the LeFlore boys’ basketball program as Assistant Coach where he was assigned to develop, train, and recruit freshman boys’ basketball players into the program and assisted with the varsity basketball team.

2010 – Head Coach one season with the Mobile Bay Hurricanes, a franchise of the American Basketball Association [ABA].

2008 to Present – Head Coach of the Gulf Coast Tropics Women Semi-Pro Basketball Team, a member of the Women Blue Chip Basketball League [WBCBL].  In 2011 became Owner of the Gulf Coast Tropics.

Coach Perkins is a graduate of Bishop State Community College where he earned an Associate in Science Degree and a member of Canaan Baptist Church where he serves as a Deacon, member of the Music Ministry and Sound Technician.  He has been married to his wife Emma for 20 years.  They have six children, 7 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild.
